To get to Cabo de la Vela, you’ll first need to travel to Riohacha, the capital of the Guajira department. You can go by bus or plane, depending on where you’re coming from. Always remember to choose a licensed travel agency that guarantees your safety and the quality of your experience. Here are the 6 options most frequently sought by tourists:

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Palomino

Just as when traveling from Cartagena or Santa Marta to Riohacha, you’ll need to take a bus. At our agency, we’ll help you book a reliable transportation service to take you on your adventure.

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Riohacha

Although some people and blogs recommend traveling all the way to Uribia, we recommend traveling to Cabo de la Vela through a licensed tour agency, since most of the vehicles offering tours in Uribia are not in proper condition and do not comply with the country’s tourism regulations.

That said, some licensed travel agencies offer the same tour to Cabo de la Vela, Colombia, plus the incredible experience of the Punta Gallinas tour—all in one package at a very low price.

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Bogotá

If you’re in Colombia’s capital, you can take a flight from Bogotá to Riohacha, which takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Riohacha, look for a licensed travel agency that offers the Cabo de la Vela, Colombia tour.

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Medellín

To travel from Medellín to Riohacha, we also recommend flying, as the bus trip takes over 15 hours. Most flights from Medellín to Riohacha stop in Bogotá, resulting in a total flight time of approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes: 1 hour from Medellín to Bogotá and 1 hour and 40 minutes from Bogotá to Riohacha. Once in Riohacha, look for a licensed travel agency.

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Cartagena

To travel from Cartagena to Riohacha, we recommend taking the bus, since all flights have layovers and you’d end up taking longer to get there. To buy a ticket, go to the Transportation Terminal in Cartagena or contact a reputable company that offers a service to pick you up at your lodging and take you to Riohacha. Again, we recommend finding a licensed travel agency that meets your needs.

Traveling to Cabo de la Vela from Santa Marta

To travel from Santa Marta to Riohacha, you can purchase a ticket at the city’s Bus Terminal for between 25,000 and 30,000 pesos, depending on the season. You can also find a company that offers transportation services, picking you up at your lodging and taking you to Riohacha, where you’ll need to find a licensed tour agency to go to Cabo de la Vela. Expotur offers a tour that departs from Riohacha, which is why we do not include transportation to that destination; however, we can arrange a pickup service from your lodging in Santa Marta (for an additional fee). This transportation will take you to our office in Riohacha, where our specialized vehicles will be waiting to take you on the tour to Cabo de la Vela—all in complete safety.
