La Guajira is a beautiful place where you’ll enjoy incredible landscapes and a unique cultural and culinary experience. Before visiting La Guajira, you should not only know what tourist attractions it has, but also its warm climate, so you can choose the right items to pack. That’s why in this blog, we’ll tell you what to bring to La Guajira, regardless of the tourist destination you visit in the area.
How to pack the perfect suitcase for a trip to La Guajira?
Environmentally friendly sunscreen
La Guajira is home to Colombia’s largest desert, which gives you an idea of how intense the sun’s rays can be in this area; that’s why you should always protect your skin very well.
We always recommend that products be environmentally friendly, as we sometimes take tours to places that may be affected by the chemical components of these products.
Cap or hat
Whenever possible, we should protect ourselves a little more from the sun’s rays by wearing a cap or hat, and even sunglasses. If you don’t have one, near the tourist sites of La Guajira you will find the Wayúu people offering their handicrafts, including hats.
Water
You should not carry it in your initial luggage, but you should bear in mind the importance of drinking it constantly to avoid dehydration if you are on a tour. Therefore, before starting any expedition, it is important to check with your legal tourism agency whether you need to take water to your destination.
Comfortable clothing
Keep in mind that you will be visiting a desert region where temperatures are considerably high during the day. Therefore, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing such as shorts, leggings, or cotton garments. For the evenings, depending on your plans and where you are in La Guajira, you may want to bring something more covering, as it can get a little chilly. For example, you can bring shirts, dresses, sweatshirts, among other items.
Swimsuit
If you decide to visit Punta Gallinas, Cabo de la Vela, Mayapo, Riohacha, among other places that have beaches, you will need to bring your swimsuit so you can enjoy the experience and cool off on a hot day.
Tennis Shoes and Sandals
Both options are always necessary. Sneakers are ideal for walking around the places you visit; not only will you be more comfortable, but you will also avoid getting tired and hurting your feet.
In the case of sandals, you will need them when going for a swim at the beach or to rest your feet at night after touring the tourist sites of La Guajira.
Additional small backpack
Depending on the number of days we travel, we always carry a number of items in our suitcase that are not necessary for our daily tours of tourist attractions. If we leave our suitcase at our accommodation, we need to have a smaller bag to carry our wallet and other items that are essential at that moment.

Personal hygiene kit
We should make it a habit to travel with our personal items. Regardless of where we stay, our skin, hair, and other parts of our body are accustomed to special care and products; that is why it is necessary to bring our personal hygiene items with us.
Likewise, if you take a tour, it will be easier to obtain these items, as in some areas of La Guajira it is not easy to purchase very specific products.
Camera
You can’t visit La Guajira without a camera, even if it’s just the one on your cell phone. Remember to make sure you have enough space and battery power, as the incredible landscapes you’ll encounter during your visit to this area will require a lot of memory on your electronic device.
Environmentally friendly insect repellent
At night, depending on where you are, you may need insect repellent. As mentioned above, it is important that it is environmentally friendly, as the aim is to protect ourselves while having the least possible impact on the planet.
Extra money
When we decide to visit a place, we always make a budget for the trip; however, we recommend including an extra amount for souvenirs and purchasing the beautiful handicrafts made by the Wayuu women. You will find backpacks, wallets, sandals, hats, and many other items that are representative of their culture.
