The holidays are approaching, one of the periods of the year that we look forward to; time in which we all want to find the place and the perfect plan to get out of the routine, give our spirit a rest and recharge ourselves with positive energy. When it comes to choosing the place, we have a myriad of options, mainly if you’re in Colombia. A country full of natural wealth and activities to make your vacation an unforgettable experience. However, this time we want to help you and show you one of the most booming tourist destinations at this time of year: Riohacha.
Riohacha is a city located in the department of La Guajira, in northern Colombia; that limits the North with the Caribbean Sea, to the east with the RancherÃa River, Manaure and Maicao, to the south with the municipalities of Hatonuevo, Barrancas, Distracción, San Juan del Cesar and for the west with the municipality of Dibulla and the Caribbean Sea.
Its location allows you to enjoy amazing landscapes, unique beaches, a particular fauna and flora and cultural traditions from its native Wayuú people.
The climate of Riohacha allows it to be an excellent destination to visit at any time of the year. However, in months like March, they celebrate the Francisco El Hombre Festival; and months like June and July, which celebrate the Dividivi Festival, there is a greater influx of people, due to the cultural displays and the competitions that take place.
Here is a list of activities and places you can visit in Riohacha:
Los Flamencos Wildlife and Flora Sanctuary
The Flamencos Wildlife and Flora Sanctuary is considered one of the National Natural Parks of Colombia with the largest variety of resident and migratory waterfowl. Declared in 1992 National and Cultural Patrimony of the country. It is located in the municipality of Camarones, 15 minutes from Riohacha.
In Los Flamencos, you will find a beautiful landscape of lagoons and dry forest; In addition to the diversity of birds, mainly radiant and slender flamingos, so this territory gets its name.
If you decide to visit it, remember to respect the recommendations to make the experience enjoyable for you and the animals that inhabit the sanctuary.
Tourist Pier of Riohacha
The Tourist Pier was built in 1939 and remodeled in 2014. This attraction is very visited by those who enjoy the sunsets, the beautiful melody produced by the waves of the sea and the laughter of children and young people who use this pier as a springboard to immerse themselves in the sea and recreate.
In December, you can enjoy this wooden path of 490 meters, decorated with Christmas lights for visitors to go through, while enjoying the cool breeze and the sea.
Monument to Los Embarradores
This monument was built in honor of a festival that takes place in Riohacha, in which the participants go out to embark in the Laguna Salá, on Carnival Sunday.
This tradition, came from France. In its beginnings only men participate, but from 1967 women began to integrate.
Currently, it is a tradition that all members of the family participate in. Your only requirement is the appropriate clothing, especially the cap that only has holes for the eyes and that way you can disinhibit and waste the joy.
Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Cathedral
The Cathedral of Riohacha is an excellent place to know if you are in the City. Regardless of the religion you practice, its colonial architecture makes it worthwhile to stop and observe one of the oldest buildings in Riohacha.
In this Cathedral are the remains of the Admiral of the Republic José Prudencio Padilla.
The RancherÃas
One of the most recommended activities for those who visit the City!
The rancherias are small settlements of native peoples that allow you to have direct contact with the Wayuú culture, the largest indigenous group in Colombia.
The Wayuú still keep alive their oral tradition, through their Wayuunaiki dialect, through which they transmit their ancestral knowledge from generation to generation. It is normal to see the inhabitants of the rancherias with their traditional blankets, especially the women who are responsible for the work of the land and the home. One of the most important aspects of culture are the weavings, the Wayuú are experts not only weaving the roof of their huts and arbors but in their colorful backpacks and hammocks.
Punta Gallinas and Cabo de la vela
We want to end this blog by showing you two places that you should definitely visit. Although they are not exactly in Riohacha, they are only a few minutes away from the City, in the same Department of La Guajira.
It is here where you will discover how blue the sky can be and how it contrasts with the beautiful orange sand and the endless sea that is lost in the horizon; accompanied by the beauty of the dunes, the salty breeze and the starry nights that will make you fall in love with this region.
