ITINERARY
Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Start of the 4 Day Lost City Tour
The 4 day Lost City Tour begins in Santa Marta at 8:00 a.m., when a 4×4 vehicle picks travelers up at their accommodations and takes them to the main Expotur office. There, the guide and the support team welcome the group, provide important instructions, and answer questions before the expedition begins.
From Santa Marta, the group travels for about two and a half hours along the Caribbean highway until reaching La Aguacatera, where the unpaved road toward the town of El Mamey begins. El Mamey is the official starting point of the trekking route. Upon arrival, travelers enjoy a traditional lunch to recharge before the first hike.
First Segment of the Route (4 hours – 10 km)
After lunch, the first trekking section begins. This initial stretch covers approximately 10 km, completed in about four hours. The trail is mostly open, with limited shade and several ascents, so staying hydrated and protecting your skin from the sun is essential.
As the climb progresses through rugged terrain, travelers start to feel the characteristic climate of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Around 4:30 p.m., the group reaches Adán Camp. The guide organizes accommodations for everyone, and, if time allows, travelers can enjoy a refreshing swim in a natural pool near the camp before dinner.
Day 2 – Adán Camp – Mutanzhi – Zhulezhi Camp
The second day starts very early. At 5:00 a.m., the guide wakes the group just as the sunrise illuminates the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. After breakfast, the hike continues through two segments totaling approximately 18 km.
The first segment covers about 9 km through dense jungle landscapes. Along the way, the group passes through the Indigenous Kogui village of Mutanzhi, where the guide explains the customs, traditions, and ancestral lifestyle of this community. The trek continues to Mumake Camp, where lunch and a well-deserved rest await.
After lunch, the group begins the second segment of the day. This part of the trail includes steep paths that require endurance and good physical condition as the terrain becomes more demanding.
By the end of the day, travelers arrive at Zhulezhi Camp, an important point on the route because it is very close to the Lost City. Here, the group rests, has dinner, and spends the night surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada. This stage of the tour offers a deeper connection to the jungle environment and mountainous geography, making the experience even more immersive.
Day 3 – Zhulezhi Camp – Lost City – Mumake Camp
Day three is one of the most important moments of the tour, marking the long-awaited arrival at the archaeological site of Teyuna. Early in the morning, the group begins a 4 km hike that follows the river and curves around the mountains.
Then begins the ascent of the 1,200 stone steps built centuries ago by the Tayrona, one of the most iconic segments of the Lost City trek. As the group climbs, the dense vegetation gradually reveals the ancient terraces and structures of this sacred site.
At the top, travelers have approximately three hours to explore the Lost City. The guide shares the history, cultural significance, and the relationship that today’s Indigenous communities maintain with this ancestral territory. The atmosphere and energy of the site make the visit a profound and memorable experience.
After the guided tour, the group descends the stone steps to Paso Lorenzo Camp for lunch. The hike then continues back to Zhulezhi.
The final stretch of the day covers about 10 km until reaching Mumake Camp once again, where travelers rest, have dinner, and enjoy their third night in the jungle.
Day 4 – Mumake Camp – El Mamey – Santa Marta
The final day begins with an early breakfast and a calm sunrise. The group starts the return journey, covering 18 km divided into two segments. The first section is a 10 km walk along the same trail back to Adán Camp, where the group enjoys a short break and a light snack.
After resting, the group continues the last 8 km of the trek. At this stage, it is important to stay hydrated and maintain a steady pace, as the sun exposure and accumulated effort can make the terrain feel more demanding.
At the end of the hike, the group returns to El Mamey, the starting point of the trekking route. A final lunch awaits to celebrate the accomplishment. After resting, the 4×4 transport takes the group back to Santa Marta, concluding the 4 day Lost City Tour.

Our guide Sixto and translator Duban made this 4-day trek a great experience for our group of 4 people (team Mango). The food was excellent also thanks to our cook Jaider, and there were several choices to accomodate everyone’s preference.Posted on Robert CVerified Awesome Colombia experience Amazing experience! Tour guide, Antonio and translator, Giovanni were awesome and made the trip very enjoyable. The food was excellent and portions were more than enough. Props to the chef.Posted on EnzoVerified You must go What an amazing adventure! We were a small group of 5 plus our guide Enrique, translator Isidro, and chef Ismael. I loved the fact Isidro kept calling us "family" and that's how it felt. The team was very friendly, welcoming, the food was fantastic, and there was so much food! Enrique's knowledge and personal experience of the area made the tour more meaningful, and he even fixed my boots when the sole came off! And the Lost City was quite spectacular too... Thank you all for creating memories that I will cherish forever ❤️⭐❤️⭐Posted on Pieter JVerified Expotur is de beste!! All the communication with expotur before setting off was clear and efficient, and I felt confident that things would be properly organised. Everything ran like clockwork, from the moment I was picked up from my hostel on the first day, to the moment I was dropped off at the end, with my suitcase that had been stored in thr expotur office during the trek. As for the trek itself, we had a wonderful team in our guide Diego, translator Hebert and cook Pastora. We were so well looked after and kept well informed at every stage of the trek with interesting historical and cultural titbits. The team really cared about making sure we had a good time and were as confortable as possible in the extreme heat and humidity! The food was filling and tasty, and the coffee and hot chocolate helped to get us going in the morning. The scenery is stunning - it’s like stepping h back in time. A real privilege to be able to visit such a wild and unspoiled corner of the world. Thanks to the foresight and discipline of Diego (who woke us up a few mins early) we were the first group to arrive at the lost city on the day of our visit, so we had the place to ourselves for around half an hour. Really special. It is a challenging trek, mainly because of the heat and humidity (and rain in our case) but so worth it. Thanks expotur.Posted on Annelien HVerified Lost City Trek This tour is an unforgetable experience! Our guide Diego and translator Hebert were very excited to guide us through the jungle and share all stories of the lost city with us. Our cook Pastora made the best traditional meals for us during the tour. If you like nature and hiking, this is a must do in Colombia!Posted on Photon86Verified Great experience Great experience and top guidance, translation and food from Diego, Hebert and Pastora from Expotur. I think the difference between the different operators is their enthusiasm and dedication to give you at each moment the best. You get a good work out, amazing views, sleeping outdoor and lots of explanation of the history.Posted on Merav LVerified A once-in-a-lifetime experience to the Lost City. The trek was stunning, and the explanations along the way were engaging. The "Lost City" is a magical place, and the effort to reach it was well worth it.The team was very professional, flexible and adapted to the different personalities in the group. For example, I walked slowly, and the team made sure this had minimal impact on the group. There was always someone who accompanied me patiently, without making me feel like a burden.Posted on Felicia EVerified Making memories met de Ciudad Perdida hike! Fantastische ervaring! Posted on Don KVerified Best hiking experience in Colombia! I had an amazing experience hiking to Teyuna (Ciudad Perdida). The landscape is simply magical. Every step of the hike was so rewarding, behind every corner was a new fascinating view. My experience with Expottur was extraordinary. You can't ask for anything more. Our guide Cesar Jr. gave us so much information about the history of this special place, about the indigenous people who live in balance with nature in the area to this day and of yourse he was always up for a good joke. Juan Carlos did a great job as a translator and helped us with all questions we had. If you want to hike for 4 days, you need to be well fortified. Our cook Jesus F. took excellent care of this. Of all the groups in the camp, we were always the first to be fed. A thousand thanks Jesus!!! Santiago also supported us with everything and was a great help. One day I would like to return to Teyuna and hope that I can repeat the same tour with the same friends from Expoturs!Everyone who is able to run 8-10 k won't have an issue with the hike. What could be challenging for some people is the humidity.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
