In just three days and two nights, participants follow the trails of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, moving through jungle, mountains, rivers, and landscapes that change at every stage until reaching the terraces and archaeological remains of ancient Teyuna, known as the Lost City.
During this 3 day tour to the Lost City, travelers walk between 7 and 8 hours per day through mountainous terrain and river crossings that require endurance and solid preparation. It is a journey recommended for people accustomed to hiking and long physical efforts.

Those who choose this 3 day lost city trek must be ready to wake up early, ride by motorcycle, walk long distances, and adapt to jungle conditions. Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Beginning of the 3 Day Lost City Tour
The 3 day trek to the Lost City begins very early, at 4:30 a.m., when travelers are picked up from their accommodations in Santa Marta to start the journey toward the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The road transfer takes approximately three hours in a 4×4 vehicle until reaching El Mamey.
In this village, travelers enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning a motorcycle ride along an unpaved road. This section takes about one hour and offers an adrenaline-filled journey leading to the point where the trekking officially begins.
The first day of hiking covers about 7.6 km, approximately three hours walking through trails surrounded by vegetation, mountains, and the characteristic sounds of the Sierra Nevada jungle. Around midday, the group arrives at Mumake Camp, where a well-deserved lunch and a short rest await.
In the afternoon, the hike continues for roughly four more hours, going deeper into the rainforest. This segment is demanding but also one of the most captivating: the landscapes change constantly, and the feeling of entering Indigenous territory becomes increasingly evident.
Towards late afternoon, the group arrives at Zhulezhi Camp, a cabin located along the Buriticá River. Here, travelers will find comfortable beds, bathrooms, showers, and electricity available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is the ideal place to rest after an intense day. The day concludes with a dinner prepared by the cooking team, a perfect moment to share stories and enjoy the peaceful nighttime environment of the jungle.
Day 2 – Ascent to the Lost City Tayrona
The second day of the trek begins with an early breakfast to gain energy before one of the most anticipated moments of the tour. From Zhulezhi Camp, the Lost City is only 2 km away, but this short distance includes the biggest challenge of the entire journey: the 1,200 stone steps that lead to the archaeological terraces of Teyuna.
Upon arrival, the group will encounter one of Colombia’s most important archaeological sites. They will have around three hours for a guided tour of the Lost City. Walking through the circular terraces and listening to the stories of the Tayrona people is a unique part of the trip, marked by the connection with nature, the silence of the mountains, and the sensation of being in a place preserved for centuries.
After the visit, the group returns to Zhulezhi Camp for lunch and a short rest. They then begin the trek back to Mumake Camp, where they will spend the night after completing a fundamental part of the Lost City journey.
Once at the camp, travelers can relax, take a refreshing bath, and enjoy a dinner prepared by the agency’s cooks. Whether sleeping in a bed or a hammock, everyone has a comfortable space to restore their energy while the nighttime sounds of the jungle accompany their rest.
Day 3 – Return to El Mamey and Transfer Back to Santa Marta
On the final day of the tour, travelers begin the hike back early in the morning. After two demanding days of trekking through the Sierra Nevada, it is time to return along the same path that led them to the Lost City.
The hike to El Mamey usually takes between six and eight hours, depending on the group’s pace and weather conditions. Although it is a long stretch, many travelers enjoy it because it offers a new perspective of the jungle and the opportunity to relive the moments experienced during previous days.
Upon arriving in El Mamey, the group stops for lunch. After so many kilometers completed during the Lost City Trek, a homemade meal tastes better than ever. It is a peaceful moment to rest, share stories, and close the experience with gratitude.
Finally, travelers board the 4×4 vehicle that takes them back to Santa Marta. The return journey feels different: a mix of exhaustion, satisfaction, and the deep sense of having completed a unique adventure in one of Colombia’s most remarkable destinations.

EXCELLENT Based on 6405 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Jan_Tore2013Verified The lost city experience An absolutely fantastic experience – highly recommend Expotur! We just did the 4-day Lost City trek as a family, and it was one of the best things we've done together. From start to finish we were so happy with Expotur. The real standout was our guide, Omar – he was excellent. What makes the difference on this trek isn't just walking, it's the history of the area, what happened there, and the contact with the indigenous communities, and Omar's broad experience brought all of that to life. That, more than anything, is why we'd recommend Expotur over the other agencies we saw along the way. The food, made by Luz, was great, and the accommodation was better than we expected. Honestly the whole thing exceeded our expectations. A few honest tips: this is demanding. Only do it if you're reasonably fit, and be ready for extreme heat and humidity – we sweated buckets! Our two girls (12 and 14) were a bit skeptical and tired along the way, but they made it in the end, with a little help from a couple of motorbikes near the finish. Worth every bit of effort and every peso. One small thing for Expotur to improve: a bit more soap at the toilets would be great – handwashing really matters in those conditions to avoid any tummy bugs. Otherwise – a truly fantastic expedition. The whole family loved it. Thank you Omar and the Expotur team! Strongly recommended.Posted on Tripadvisor Arjan dVerified When in Colombia, do the lost city trek! Unforgettable experience, super organization. When Nelson and Ariel are your guides you will be in good hands!Posted on Tripadvisor Sabrya IVerified Best experience in our trip through Colombia! I did the lost city hike with my mom and sister, and it was the best experience in our trip through Colombia! Sixto the guide and Heberth the translator were amazing and told us so many interesting stories. Walking through the forest, having a really hard time sometimes, but mostly enjoying the beautiful surroundings was incredible. Also the lost city was very interesting to witness. The whole experience was truly unforgettable and the group we did it with felt like our family for the days. We were with 16 people in our group, but because we all walked at our own pace it didn’t feel like that much. In the evening we all played games at the base camp. I would definitely recommend this when you are in Colombia! It was our best experience so far!Posted on Tripadvisor Iris BVerified Fantastische ervaring! Posted on Tripadvisor srdebVerified Lost City trek Hey was een hele leuke ervaring! Service was top! Een enkele kleine opmerking: water in flessen moest telkens gekocht worden en dit was behoorlijk prijzig. Er was telkens gefilterd water, maar dit is nog steeds niet voor iedereen goed voor de maag.Posted on Tripadvisor Sam MVerified Very wet but great hike !! Awesome experience, the trekking was challenging but at the same time easy thanks to how well prepared was everything, the routes, the food, stops, accommodation all was prepared by millimeter, it felt very professional. Special thanks to our guides Ida, Carlos and Yiyo, also the food was delicious thanks to Lesia, always fresh and well prepared.

Ontzettend gave hike!

My husband and I loved every minute of it, including the knee deep mud and the 1.2k steps to the lost city. Our group of 12 people was incredible and mostly from Europe. As a group we concluded the trek to be medium tricky level. The food was great at all times, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The little shops on the road have everything you might forget packing. The beds and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. Huge thanks to our guide Omar, translator Duban, cook Albeiro and auxiliar Sol. They were very supportive, caring, informative, attentive, fun and patient.

The Lost City Trek with Expotur was one of the best experiences of my trip to Colombia! The hike was challenging but incredibly rewarding — the landscapes are stunning, the atmosphere is peaceful, and reaching Ciudad Perdida felt truly special. Our guide Elizabeth was absolutely amazing — knowledgeable, funny, and full of passion for the history and culture of the region. Heberth, our translator, made sure everyone understood everything clearly and brought so much positive energy to the group. And we can’t forget Pichi, our fantastic cook, who somehow managed to prepare delicious meals in the middle of the jungle!Everything was perfectly organized, and I always felt safe and well taken care of. I did the trek with the Monkeys, and together we had an unforgettable time.Thank you, Expotur, Elizabeth, Heberth, and Pichi, for an incredible adventure — I’ll remember it forever! 💚🌿🇨🇴

I took the 3 Days Lost City Tour. And I absolutely enjoyed it. It was a great adventure with great organisation. Thanks to our guide and translator Daniel and Evert. They had a lot of experience and shared a lot of information about the lost city and the indigenous people with us. Also thanks to our chef who prepared food for our group at each stop. I absolutely recommend this tour! And with good weather conditions (which we had) the tour ist manageable within 3 days. Go Tairona group 😀

Most challenging hike I’ve ever done, but our guide and team Ida, Danilo, Santiago and Eliecer/Sancocho took care of us every step of the way. Educational, informative, very personal experience. A million praises for each of them!- Mark
