This monument was built in honor of a festival that takes place in Riohacha, in which the participants go out to embark in the Laguna Salá, on Carnival Sunday.

This tradition, came from France. In its beginnings only men participate, but from 1967 women began to integrate.

Currently, it is a tradition that all members of the family participate in. Your only requirement is the appropriate clothing, especially the cap that only has holes for the eyes and that way you can disinhibit and waste the joy.

The Rancherías

One of the most recommended activities for those who visit the City!

The rancherias are small settlements of native peoples that allow you to have direct contact with the Wayuú culture, the largest indigenous group in Colombia.

The Wayuú still keep alive their oral tradition, through their Wayuunaiki dialect, through which they transmit their ancestral knowledge from generation to generation. It is normal to see the inhabitants of the rancherias with their traditional blankets, especially the women who are responsible for the work of the land and the home. One of the most important aspects of culture are the weavings, the Wayuú are experts not only weaving the roof of their huts and arbors but in their colorful backpacks and hammocks.

Punta Gallinas and Cabo de la vela

We want to end this blog by showing you two places that you should definitely visit. Although they are not exactly in Riohacha, they are only a few minutes away from the City, in the same Department of La Guajira.

It is here where you will discover how blue the sky can be and how it contrasts with the beautiful orange sand and the endless sea that is lost in the horizon; accompanied by the beauty of the dunes, the salty breeze and the starry nights that will make you fall in love with this region.
