How to find “The Lost City” in the heart of Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta

All human beings feel a desire and a fascination for the unknown, for always going beyond their limits, and it is that capacity of wonder that has led us to find wonderful and hidden places in our planet; but it is not only about places where no one has been before; but also to rediscover places that have been forgotten over time. At this point in South America there is a country called Colombia where there is a “Lost City“; but how is it possible?

It is, well the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, is not a place where only you could find beaches; but also rivers, beautiful landscapes and specially a lot of history to tell.

TEYUNA | Origin of the peoples of the Earth.

The lost city or Teyuna as it is known among Tayronas was built around 800 A.C. to 1,100 meters high in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada Santa Marta on the right of the Buritaca River; it was abandoned between 1,550 and 1,600 A.C during the time of the Spanish conquest.

Only until 1976 it was discovered by a team of archaeologists from the Colombian anthropology Institute, and since then there have been many archaeological findings, Lost city a spiritual, commercial and living center composed by a network of villages, which could have housed between 2,000 and 8,000 in about 300 villages of various sizes, which were connected to each other through intricate ways.

Thanks to research conducted by archaeologists has been able to rebuild sophisticated architecture and stone engineering that includes terraces, retaining wall, roads, bridges, stairs, canals and aqueducts. Placing a stone on another, they form a semicircle with slope that allowed the passage of the water of rains, avoiding the landslide, in addition to multiple roads that crossed the city. However, this wonder was not abandoned for a long time since the communities Arhuacas, Kankuamos, Koguis and Wiwas used to visit it very regularly and to be able to perform her ceremonies and rituals quietly and for this he had kept silent about it.

Well, In order to get to this hidden paradise among the tropical rainforest is very easy, you only going to need: some guides assigned by Expotur (is a tourism agency authorized, located in the city of Santa Marta) to made the trek unforgettable, adventurous spirit, love for nature, comfortable clothes and desire to disconnect from the world.

The tour of this adventure starts taking the road of Santa Marta , to El Mamey which is located to 65 km. From that point are four or five days (round trip) demanding hike in the jungle, waterfalls and bridges hanging, making the journey an adventure going through horseshoe paths and trails that intersect the Buritaca River; which is fed with constant rains and melting snow  at 5,775 surmounting the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Then, we continue with the long walk, during the tour you will see the diversity of fauna and flora that are in this place; going on a rise of up to 1300 m through and 1,200 steps covered by moss caused by the humidity of the land.

Finally, you will arrive at the main settlement. Throughout the tour you can enjoy the mystical atmosphere it transmits, in each plant and animal, as if each stone will tell a story; only it is necessary to open the mind to listen. Once the goal has been reached and after so much walking for hours and hours you will reach the beautiful terraces built in that place.

Una experiencia única

Hicimos el trekking de 5 días y ha sido algo único. El recorrido es un reto personal y cada etapa, por dura que fuese, era una recompensa. Los campamentos y la comida estaban realmente bien y casi todas las noches nos tocó dormir en litera, lo cual agradecimos. Solo hubo un campamento que no nos gustó demasiado por estar muy masificado, el Paraíso (el anterior a la Ciudad Perdida). La Ciudad impresiona y el guía (Sixto) estuvo a la altura.
